WHITE CROSSES

Those White Crosses Are There For a Reason

white_cross_01

The white roadside crosses along Montana's highways were put in place by the American Legion as a memorial to persons killed in highway accidents. The statewide program was launched by the legion in 1953, and today it is up to the 134 individual posts to continue the program in their area. The Montana Highway Department furnishes the Legion with the names of traffic accident victims and the location of the accidents. If more than one person died in an accident, all the crosses are mounted on a single pole. The crosses cannot be placed along interstate highways because of highway department regulations.
